THANKS TO ALL THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL, STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS, IT HAS BEEN A GREAT WEEK! WE WORKED HARD, BUT WE ALSO HAD A LOT OF FUN!
THANKS TO ALL THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL, STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS, IT HAS BEEN A GREAT WEEK! WE WORKED HARD, BUT WE ALSO HAD A LOT OF FUN!
The summer school "Mountain Permafrost in the Anthropocene: geomorphology, hydrology, ecology, microbiology" activities were succesfully completed, with field measurements, biotic samples collection and laboratory observation/identification. Seminars covered different aspects of science related to the study of permafrost and glaciarized catchments:
Seminar 1: Geology and hydrology of Madritsch (Giulia Bertolotti, Matteo Delpero, Stefano Brighenti)
Seminar 2: Mountain permafrost and rock glaciers (Giulia Bertolotti)
Seminar 3: Investigating the geomorphology-hydrology-ecology nexus in Alpine areas (Stefano Brighenti)
Seminar 4: Basics on hydrology research (Francesco Comiti)
Seminar 5: primer on stream ecology (Maria Cristina Bruno)
Seminar 6: Trace elements and stable water isotopes as natural tracers in Alpine rivers (Matteo Delpero, Stefano Brighenti)
Seminar 7: Alpine stream biofilm: what, where, how (Monica Tolotti)
Seminar 8: Consumers and foodwebs (Maria Cristina Bruno)
Seminar 9: Fundamentals of environmental microbiology (Lorenzo Brusetti)
Seminar 10: From Theory to Bench: The practice of Molecular Biology (Federica Piergiacomo)
Seminar 11 (invited): Permafrost monitoring systems applied in the Autonomous Province of Trento (Matteo Zumiani, Geological Service, presented by Monica Tolotti)
Seminar 12 (invited): Origin, evolution and fate of new proglacial lakes in the deglaciating Alps (Maria Vittoria Tenci, Fondazione Edmund Mach and Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering of Trento University)
The organizers would like to thank the Italian Association of Oceanology and Limnology (Associazione Italiana Oceanologia e Limnologia, AIOL), for the sponsorship and financial support.

The ROCK-ME summer school is ongoing!
10 Phd and Master students, and Postdoc researchers from Austria, Germany, Italy, Chile, Romania, and 8 instructors are presently in Marteltal, South Tyrol, attending the ROCK-ME: Mountain Permafrost in the Anthropocene Summer School!

June-September 2023: Second sampling campaign in the Italian field sites concluded, all data/samples were collectd and data analysis is in progress!
On June 13, a landslide hit the Austrian field sites (https://www.tt.com/artikel/30856839/bergsturz-bei-galtuer-mehr-als-100-000-m-material-abgebrochen-mure-fast-2-km-lang), the road to access the field sites was temporarily closed, which required rescheduling the main field tasks
The ROCK-ME team was present at the 6th European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP 2023), held in Puigcerdà (Catalonia, Spain), 18-22 June 2023, chairing Session 5: Water in Mountain Permafrost Environments (https://eucop2023.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Session-5.pdf). Abstracts are available in the box below
ROCK-ME first event, where the preliminary results, the scope of the project and the future activities was publically disseminated at Bozen Free University on 19 May 2023
Water samples and biological samples collected in 2022 have been analysed from fall 2022 to spring 2023
First data collection/sampling campaign successfully concluded in summer 2022.
